DVLA Warning: Renew Your Licence if You Passed Before 2016

Drivers who passed their test before 2016 risk fines or even vehicle seizure if they fail to renew their licences on time.

UK driving licences are valid for 10 years, meaning those issued before 2016 may now be nearing expiry. Driving with an expired licence is a serious offence, which can invalidate your insurance and lead to fines of up to £1,000—or even the seizure of your vehicle.

The DVLA issued a reminder on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Remember to renew your driving licence every 10 years, then the journey can go on!” They also provided a link for licence renewal.

Renewing an expired licence is straightforward and costs £14 online or £21.50 at a Post Office. The DVLA typically sends reminders when a licence is due for renewal.

Drivers over 70, bus and lorry drivers, and those with short-term medical licences have different renewal processes, which are outlined on Gov.uk. It’s important to start the renewal process well before your licence expires.

If your licence expires while your renewal is being processed, you can legally continue driving until your new licence arrives.
